Sandbox Theatre is coming to the GAI with three performances of their new play In The Treetops, celebrating the life and works of Minnesota-German and New Ulm-native, Wanda Gág. Gág is best known for her books Millions of Cats, Tales from Grimm, and The Funny Thing. The entire production of In The Treetops was built from scratch via Sandbox Theatre's unique creation process, with the story focusing on Wanda Gág's formative years as a teenager and young adult.
The eldest of seven children, Wanda's father Anton (himself a painter and studio photographer) died when she was just fifteen. His passing forced Wanda into the role of provider for her younger siblings and left her weighted by family obligations and societal pressures. Spurred on by Anton's dying words, "What papa could not do, Wanda will have to finish," Wanda was determined to carry on her father's pursuit of an artistic life, and fulfill her dreams of providing for her family as a working artist.
Filled with fairy tales, fables, and songs, In The Treetops will appeal to both children and adults. There will be a Q&A session after the Saturday matinee.
*NOTE: Performances take place in the GAI's 3rd Floor Ballroom and the GAI does not have elevator access.
