Beginning German Genealogy 

Sunday, April 23,  2pm—4:30pm

Cost includes program and a traditional Kaffee und Kuchen break

Join us for an afternoon workshop exploring the basic German needed when beginning research into your family’s genealogy. Led by long-time GAI, Germanic Genealogy Society (GGS), and Pommern Regional Group (PRG) member, Margie Deutsch, the class will consist of a presentation followed by a hands-on workshop where you can begin translating your first document.

Topics for the course include:

  • Types of German letters (old German writing) - Sütterlin, Fraktur, Gothic 
  • Glossary of frequently used words & terms and abbreviations
  • Examples of common documents; birth certificate, marriage certificate, passage documents etc. 
  • Family Group Sheet & Pedigree Chart
  • Review websites & tools such as Family Search and Ancestry
  • How & where to find reliable information
