    New Ulm's 36th Annual Oktoberfest
    October 6-7 and 13-14, 2017

    New Ulm, MN

This traditional festival is modeled after one of the world’s largest celebrations, held each year for several centuries in Munich, Germany. New Ulm’s version takes place during the first two full weekends in October, with festivities happening all over town! The main locations for Oktoberfest are Historic Downtown, Best Western Plus, Schell’s Brewery, and Morgan Creek Vineyards.

Start in historic downtown New Ulm for an Oktoberfest celebration in the streets both Saturdays of Oktoberfest. The Germanic-American Day Parade kicks off the downtown festival at 11am on Saturday, October 7. Organized by the New Ulm German-Bohemian Heritage Society, all who are proud of their Germanic heritage are invited to march in the parade.

A new parade has been added to kick off the second weekend festivities: The Oktoberfest Promenade Parade is a "Wunderbare Parade der Deutscher Dinge" (Wonderful Parade of German Things). The parade begins at 11am on Saturday, October 14th and is a chance for everyone to show off their German tracht and costumes related to Germany. Dress up and join the parade! Both parade routes flow right into the Downtown Oktoberfest celebration, with music (German music first, followed by a more contemporary band), German (and American) food, local beer (Schell’s) and wine (Morgan Creek Vineyards), and more: games, horse-drawn trolley rides, historic popcorn wagon, a stein-holding contest and other events place both Saturdays of Oktoberfest. Break out your dirndls and lederhosen and join in the fun.

Festivities at the Best Western Plus include a full schedule of “oom-pah!” with performances by New Ulm’s famous Concord Singers, a Mannerchor dating from 1931 singing German songs, plus other bands. The celebration kicks off with the official keg opening on Friday evening, as practiced in Germany’s Oktoberfests. The food and music continue late into the night on both Fridays and both Saturdays.

Schell’s Brewery knows how to throw a party, and their Schell’s Oktoberfest celebration, held on Saturday, October 14th is no exception! Schell’s is a German Craft Beer brewery that was begun by German settlers in New Ulm in 1860, so they know what they are doing when it comes to German beer and festivals! Music, beer, and lederhosen abound!

Ranked among the Best Oktoberfest Celebrations in the Nation by The Huffington Post (2016), Fox News (2016), USA TODAY 10Best (2015), Tripping.com (2015), Fodor’s Travel (2014), and voted Best Oktoberfest in MN by WCCO (2014).

History is full of assassinated leaders, but also full of near misses. Join us with Dr. Susanne Wagner, German Program Director at the University of St. Thomas, for a discussion focusing on the different types of Widerstand (resistance) and some of the more prominent resistance groups, such as the men involved in the July 20, 1944 failed attempt to assassinate Hitler, the Kreisauer Kreis (Kreisau Circle), the Rote Kapelle (the Red Orchestra), and the Weiße Rose (White Rose). What were the motivations of Widerstand fighters with Colonel Claus Graf von Stauffenberg, who planted the bomb that missed its mark? How do we evaluate Einsame Kämpfer (lonely fighters) such as Jägerstätter and George Elser, or the passive resistance of the members of the Weiße Rose and the Kreisauer Kreis?  Are the Swing Kids really Widerstand? The more extreme a regime, the more consequent the resistance against it!

Wagner is a cultural and literary historian focusing on 19th-/20th century Germany with a research emphasis on resistance literature. In addition to heading the German Program at the University of St. Thomas, she is also a member of the Executive Council of the American Council of Teachers of German (AATG).

In addition to heading the German Program at the University of St. Thomas, she is also a member of the Executive Council of the American Council of Teachers of German (AATG).

    Christmas Luminaries at Schell’s Brewery
    December 24-25, 2017; 6:00pm
    New Ulm, MN

At New Ulm’s August Schell Brewery, the Christmas Luminaries display is a tradition. Schell’s Brewery, the second-oldest family-owned brewery in the United States, was established by German immigrants in 1860 and is today the largest brewery in Minnesota. It was recently voted the Best Brewery in MN by WCCO viewers. Still owned by the descendants, the Marti family lights luminaries on the brewery grounds and invites the public to come stroll through the park. They are lit on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day at 6pm.

    Fasching Festival
    Saturday, February 10, 2018
    New Ulm, MN

Fasching is an old Germanic carnival tradition that originated in the European Alps to chase away winter. Each year, strips of cloth are strung across downtown streets in the German peasant tradition, and the “Narren,” masked characters in colorful costumes, walk the streets inviting people to the party. Held at New Ulm’s Best Western Plus, Fasching includes music, food and dancing, and homeland costumes are encouraged.

    Schell’s Bock Fest
    March 3, 2018
    August Schell Brewery
    New Ulm, MN

Schell’s Bock Fest takes place outdoors on the grounds of New Ulm’s August Schell Brewery, the second-oldest family-owned brewery in the US and the largest brewery in MN. Schell’s was recently voted the Best Brewery in MN by WCCO viewers. Enjoy an award-winning beer or root beer beside a big bonfire and a few thousand friends. Resounding olde-time music from The Bockfest Boys, playing traditional Germanic and popular music, including such favorites as Ein Prosit and Ring of Fire. The highlight of the day is the Bock Medallion Hunt, when participants use clues to find the “bocks” (a gruff and stubborn goat of winter), to win cash and merchandise prizes.
