GAI Summer Language Camps 2017

Half-day, Full-Day, and Extended Care Options.
Camp eligibility is based on grade level for 2017 / 2018.
Grades 1-3: Weeks 1-9 (June 19 to Aug. 18)
Kindergarten: Weeks 8 & 9 - German Safari (Aug. 7 to Aug. 18)

The 2017 GAI Summer Language Camp program for children will take place June 19 - August 18 on-site at the GAI. Each camp will last one week (M-F) and is centered around a fun, highly-interactive theme. Beginners to bilingual campers are welcome, as different activities will be offered according to the children's language skills. Teachers and children will speak, hear, sing, and create in German while exploring subjects including art & crafts, photography, geography, nature, cooking, science and mystery.

The $130 ($150 non-members) enrollment fee includes all materials and daily healthy snacks.

Camp is scheduled Monday-Friday* from 9am-12pm. (*except 4th of July week)

Additional options include:

  • Early morning drop-off starting at 8am at no additional charge
  • Afternoon care from noon to 5:30pm ($120/week). During the afternoon, children will continue to play, read, write, and interact in German.

All of our camp instructors are professional German teachers & educators with training and experience in teaching German as a foreign language. The GAI is a local non-profit organization committed to providing the highest quality German language instruction at affordable, family-friendly prices.

Week 1: Kleine Künstler (Little Artists)
June 19 - June 23, Grades 1-3 - Register by May 19 


Find your inner artist and explore different media and techniques each day at this art camp! Children will be exposed to drawing, painting, sculpting, and creating two- and three-dimensional personal pieces of art to take home.

Week 2: Reise um die Erde (Journey around the World)
June 26 - June 30, Grades 1-3 - Register by May 26  


Children will learn about the world - oceans and continents and explore geography, along with different countries, cultures and languages. 

Week 3: Das Leben aufgenommen (Life - in pictures) 
July 5 - July 7* (3-day camp), Grades 1-3 - Register by June 2


This camp will feature a mix of photography and observational life drawing. Children will learn how to make their own sketchbooks, do drawings and take pictures and go on a photo scavenger hunt. 

Week 4: Die heisse Spur - Junge Detektive (Young Detectives) 
July 10 - July 14, Grades 1-3 - OPEN REGISTRATION


Miss Marple and Sherlock Holmes visit Summit Hill! Learn about the secrets and methods of two famous detectives, solve a mystery and write your own chapter with the help of a real author of detective stories. 

Week 5: Das macht Sinn! (That makes sense!)
July 17 - July 21, Grades 1-3 - OPEN REGISTRATION


During this camp participants will learn about the five senses, how they work and how you can manage living without one of them. 

Week 6: Kinder in der Küche (Kids in the Kitchen)
July 24 - July 28, Grades 1-3 - CAMP IS FULL 


Back by popular demand! Explore native German dishes, kitchen safety, and nutrition. Children will bring home a sample dish each day as well as a completed cook book at the end of the week that features all of our recipes. (NOTE - We do our best to accommodate children with allergies and NO NUTS will be used, but dishes may contain gluten, eggs or dairy)  CAMP IS FULL - contact Language Services at 651-222-2979 or to be added to the Wait List

Week 7: St. Paul Wanderverein (St. Paul Hiking Club) 
July 31 - Aug 4, Grades 1-3 - OPEN REGISTRATION 


Campers will learn about the local environment and ecology. Activities will include walking and exploring the area to see different natural features common to Minnesota.

Week 8: Reise nach Europa (Trip to Europe)
Aug 7- Aug 11, Grades 1-3 - CAMP IS FULL


The campers will take a trip to Europe and explore the German speaking countries along with other languages spoken and learn about 'Land & Leute' (the people and their customs). CAMP IS FULL - contact Language Services at 651-222-2979 or to be added to the Wait List

Week 9: Sonne, Mond & Sterne (Sun, Moon & Stars)
Aug 14 - Aug 18, Grades 1-3 - CAMP IS FULL


This camp will offer a glimpse into the sky - the children will learn about astronomy, hear stories and use arts & crafts to create stars & planets. CAMP IS FULL - contact Language Services at 651-222-2979 or to be added to the Wait List

Weeks 8-9: German Safari 
Aug 7-11 or Aug 14-18,  FOR ALL incoming Kindergarteners;  

Discover the natural world auf Deutsch with plenty of hands-on activities, crafts, songs and indoor / outdoor play while learning basic German words and vocabulary. This camp will prepare the kids for Kindergarten in the Fall.

Registration Information

Camps will fill on a first-come, first-served basis. Course fees are due in full at the time of registration, unless other arrangements have been made with Language Services. As camps reach capacity, names can be added to a Wait List.

Payment Plans

Families registering for 4 weeks or more may call Language Services at 651-222-2979 to set up a payment plan.  A credit card will be kept on file and charged on the 15th of the month for any camps beginning the following month.

Refund Policy
  • Camp and afternoon care canceled by the GAI: 100%
  • Prior to the registration deadline: 100%, less a $40 processing fee per child
  • No refunds will be issued past the registration deadline.

Afternoon Care

  • Afternoon care can be added until the week prior to the scheduled camp. 
  • Afternoon care additions during the week of camp week will be charged the Drop-In rate of $40/day. Payment is due at the time of service.

The GAI offers a limited number of scholarships to children, which will cover 50% of the camp and care costs.
