5-50-500K Legacy Challenge

At the annual Legacy Society Breakfast on April 18, longtime member and supporter of the GAI Bruce Larson announced that he is pledging $50,000 to the GAI over the next 5 years, as well as making provisions for an additional $100,000 of support as part of his estate plan.  Mr. Larson’s gift increases the total Legacy funds pledged and received since 2010 to $250,000.

Bruce’s pledge serves as an inspiring kick-off to the GAI’s new 5-50-500K Legacy Challenge, the goal of which is to raise the total of Legacy funds received and pledged to five hundred thousand within the next five years.  Legacy funds are separate from the general operating budget and support special projects while building financial reserves.

1. Why is the GAI launching this campaign?

The GAI is experiencing tremendous growth. Its education programs are full to capacity; the quality and quantity of cultural programming has increased dramatically, and people throughout the state of Minnesota are expressing their desire for more exhibits, seminars, and programs related to Germanic heritage and culture.

The GAI Board of Directors has started the process of developing the grand vision for what the GAI can grow into over the next decade, and Legacy funds will play a large role in supporting that vision financially.

2. What do these donations fund?

A donor may choose any one or combination of the following four funds to allocate their gift:

  • Haus and Grounds: for repairs, maintenance, and new building projects
  • Education: for educational programs and scholarships
  • Operations & Cultural Programming
  • Endowment: for long-term growth of principal and investment income

3. Is a gift of cash the only way I can participate?

No. There are a variety of options, including donating stock, retirement assets, a life insurance policy, bequeaths, estate gifts, and charitable gift annuities. The estimated value of the gift will count toward the five hundred thousand challenge goal.

4. Is there a minimum gift required in order for a donor to participate in this challenge?

No. The GAI welcomes gifts of any size to help us meet our goal. Gifts valued at $5,000 or more qualify the donor for membership in the GAI Legacy Society.

5. Do I have to donate $5,000 now in order to join the GAI Legacy Society?

No. If you have made a deferred gift such as remembering the GAI in your will, you qualify now for Legacy Society membership. Just contact the GAI to start the simple enrollment process.
