It’s time for a movie night at the GAI! We will be screening Kaddish für einen Freund, a fictional tale of an unlikely friendship between Alexander, an 84 year-old Russian Jew, and Ali, a teenage Palestinian refugee. To gain acceptance with his new peers in Berlin, Ali breaks in and ransacks his neighbor’s flat, only to be caught by the owner, Alexander. With the threat of being deported and to keep the peace for his family, Ali works alongside Alexander to repair the damage. As they work together, tempers flare at first, but eventually they reach a genuine connection when they realize that the fragile existence of each depends largely on the other. This coming-of-age story shows the slow transformation of how prejudice and dislike can become a beautiful friendship through understanding. If you missed seeing this film last year, you'll want to be sure to attend.
Cost of the event is $12, which includes admission and two complimentary beverages. Payment will be taken at the door. The bar will open at 6pm and the film will start at 7pm in the GAI Ballroom. Run time is 1 hour and 34 minutes.
The GAI's Kino Kneipe series is made possible in part by the Goethe Institut.
