    Wiener Kaffeehaus
    Sunday, July 23
    2pm: Presentation
    3pm: Kaffee Service

    $15 GAI Members, $20 Non-members

Join us for this special event to learn about Viennese Coffee House culture with GAI member and Vienna native Monika Fulton. After the presentation, you get a chance to order Kaffee specialties from a Karte served Kaffeehaus-style and enjoy them mit Torte.

Coffee in Vienna is not just a morning pick-me-up or an afternoon perk. It is NEVER drunk in paper cups, nor is it guzzled down while getting from point A to point B. In Vienna, coffee is a way of life and is an essential part of the local culture.

In fact, UNESCO has added Viennese Coffee House culture to their list of intangible cultural heritage, saying that the coffee houses have a very specific atmosphere and are places "where time and space are consumed, but only the coffee is found on the bill."

Online registration is now closed. Please contact the GAI Office for more information 651-222-7027 ext. 0.

    Abend im Alsace
Part of our Sommer Biergarten Series

    Friday, August 11,
    6pm-9pm
(Food served à la carte until 8pm)
    Free Admission

This August, we are proud to partner with Alliance Française to bring you a cross-cultural Biergarten night; Abend im Alsace. Alsace (spelled Elsass in German) is a region in northeastern France along the Rhine River plain. Bordering Germany and Switzerland, it has alternated between German and French control over the centuries, creating a unique blend of language, culture, and cuisine.

At our Abend im Alsace, you can try some Flammkuchen (Alsatian pizza) or Alsatian Schnitzel while enjoying the warm, summer evening on our beautiful grounds. Sip on French wine or a German beer while listening to traditional French-Alsatian folk music by Philip Gallandat and Juan Kuffner.

**Deutsche Tage Personal Sponsors, remember to wear your 2017 "I ♥ DT" buttons for $1 off beer at our summer events!**

History is full of assassinated leaders, but also full of near misses. Join us with Dr. Susanne Wagner, German Program Director at the University of St. Thomas, for a discussion focusing on the different types of Widerstand (resistance) and some of the more prominent resistance groups, such as the men involved in the July 20, 1944 failed attempt to assassinate Hitler, the Kreisauer Kreis (Kreisau Circle), the Rote Kapelle (the Red Orchestra), and the Weiße Rose (White Rose). What were the motivations of Widerstand fighters with Colonel Claus Graf von Stauffenberg, who planted the bomb that missed its mark? How do we evaluate Einsame Kämpfer (lonely fighters) such as Jägerstätter and George Elser, or the passive resistance of the members of the Weiße Rose and the Kreisauer Kreis?  Are the Swing Kids really Widerstand? The more extreme a regime, the more consequent the resistance against it!

Wagner is a cultural and literary historian focusing on 19th-/20th century Germany with a research emphasis on resistance literature. In addition to heading the German Program at the University of St. Thomas, she is also a member of the Executive Council of the American Council of Teachers of German (AATG).
